12 Sweet Potato Casserole Recipes for Holiday Sides Worth Sharing
Sweet potato casserole works because roasted sweet potatoes bring their own natural sweetness and a silky, scoopable texture, while a crunchy topping gives you contrast in every single bite. The butter and cream add richness, and the cinnamon and nutmeg warm up the flavour without ever covering the wonderful potato itself. Each version below takes that same foundation in its own direction, from traditional marshmallow to a savoury garlic bake, a spicy chipotle skillet, and a make-ahead freezer pan.

Start here for the classic marshmallow crunch, try the pecan streusel for a nutty top, go savoury garlic if sweet toppings are not your thing, and there’s a make-ahead freezer version for planning ahead.

Classic Marshmallow Sweet Potato Casserole
This is the one you picture when someone says sweet potato casserole, a soft spiced mash under a puffy golden crown of toasted marshmallows. I skip the canned potatoes and roast fresh ones so the flavour stays deep and real.

Ingredients (makes 8 servings)
- Sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed: 1.4 kg (3 lb)
- Butter: 60 g (4 tbsp)
- Brown sugar: 50 g (1/4 cup)
- Whole milk: 120 ml (1/2 cup)
- Large egg: 1
- Vanilla extract: 1 tsp
- Ground cinnamon: 1 tsp
- Ground nutmeg: 1/4 tsp
- Salt: 1/2 tsp
- Mini marshmallows: 200 g (4 cups)
Instructions
Step 1: Put the 1.4 kg (3 lb) cubed sweet potatoes into a large pot and cover them with cold water by about 2.5 cm (1 inch). Bring to a boil over high heat, then lower the heat to a simmer and cook for 12 minutes, until a fork slides through easily. Drain the potatoes in a colander and give them a minute to steam dry so your mash does not turn watery.
Step 2: Heat your oven to 190C (375F). While the potatoes are still warm, push them through a ricer or mash them in the pot with the 60 g (4 tbsp) butter until smooth. Stir in the 50 g (1/4 cup) brown sugar, 120 ml (1/2 cup) milk, egg, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Taste the mix now and add a pinch more salt if it needs it.
Step 3: Scoop the mash into a 23 x 33 cm (9 x 13 inch) baking dish and smooth the top with a spatula. You want an even surface so the marshmallows brown evenly rather than sliding into low spots.
Step 4: Scatter the 200 g (4 cups) mini marshmallows in a single layer across the top, going right to the edges. Bake for 20 to 22 minutes, until the marshmallows puff up and the peaks turn deep golden brown. Watch it closely during the last 3 minutes, because once that sugar starts to colour you only have a few seconds before it burns.
Step 5: Pull the dish out and let it sit for 5 minutes so the marshmallow topping sets a little. Serve it warm with a big spoon, scooping deep so you get both the creamy potato and the stretchy top in every portion.
Brown Sugar Pecan Streusel Sweet Potato Casserole
For the people who would rather have crunch than marshmallow, this version buries the same silky mash under a thick layer of buttered pecans and brown sugar. The topping stays crisp in a way marshmallows never do, so leftovers hold up better too.

Ingredients (makes 10 servings)
- Sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks: 1.8 kg (4 lb)
- Butter, softened: 100 g (7 tbsp)
- Heavy cream: 120 ml (1/2 cup)
- Dark brown sugar: 100 g (1/2 cup)
- Large eggs: 2
- Vanilla extract: 1 tsp
- Ground cinnamon: 1 tsp
- Ground ginger: 1/2 tsp
- Salt: 3/4 tsp
- Pecans, roughly chopped: 150 g (1 1/2 cups)
- All purpose flour: 60 g (1/2 cup)
Instructions
Step 1: Put the 1.8 kg (4 lb) sweet potatoes in a pot, cover with water, and boil for 15 minutes until very tender. Drain well and return them to the warm pot so the steam can escape, which keeps your mash from getting soupy.
Step 2: Heat your oven to 180C (350F). Mash the potatoes with half the 100 g (1/2 cup) dark brown sugar, the 100 g (7 tbsp) butter, 120 ml (1/2 cup) heavy cream, eggs, vanilla, cinnamon, ginger, and salt until smooth and a bit loose. It will firm up in the oven, so a soft mash is what you want.
Step 3: In a separate bowl, work the remaining 50 g (1/4 cup) dark brown sugar, 60 g (1/2 cup) flour, and the remaining butter together with your fingers until it looks like damp sand. Fold in the 150 g (1 1/2 cups) pecans and give it one squeeze so some of the mixture forms small clumps.
Step 4: Spread the potato mixture into a buttered 23 x 33 cm (9 x 13 inch) dish, then scatter the pecan streusel evenly over every inch of the surface. Bake for 30 minutes, until you see the filling bubble faintly around the edges and the topping smells deeply nutty.
Step 5: Set the dish on a trivet and let it rest for 10 minutes. Scoop generous portions onto plates while it is still warm, making sure each spoonful you lift catches a bit of the crisp layer on top.
Savoury Garlic Herb Sweet Potato Casserole
This is the answer for anyone who loves sweet potatoes but rolls their eyes at a sugary topping. Roasted garlic and fresh herbs push the mash toward the savoury side, and a rough breadcrumb crust gives you crunch without any sweetness at all.

Ingredients (makes 6 servings)
- Sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced thick: 1 kg (2.2 lb)
- Garlic, whole head: 1
- Butter: 70 g (5 tbsp)
- Milk: 80 ml (1/3 cup)
- Sour cream: 60 g (1/4 cup)
- Fresh rosemary, finely chopped: 1 tsp
- Fresh thyme leaves: 1 tsp
- Salt and black pepper: 3/4 tsp and 1/2 tsp
- Panko breadcrumbs: 60 g (2/3 cup)
- Olive oil, divided: 2 tbsp
Instructions
Step 1: Heat your oven to 200C (400F). Cut the top quarter off the garlic head, drizzle it with a little of the olive oil, wrap it in foil, and roast for 35 minutes while you boil the 1 kg (2.2 lb) sweet potatoes in salted water for 15 minutes. Drain the potatoes and squeeze the soft roasted garlic cloves out of their skins.
Step 2: Mash the potatoes with the roasted garlic, 70 g (5 tbsp) butter, 80 ml (1/3 cup) milk, and 60 g (1/4 cup) sour cream until smooth. Fold in the rosemary, thyme, salt, and pepper. Taste it now and adjust the salt before you add the crust, because the breadcrumbs will not carry any seasoning.
Step 3: Spoon the mash into a 20 cm (8 inch) square baking dish. In a small bowl, toss the 60 g (2/3 cup) panko with the remaining olive oil and a pinch of salt, then scatter it over the top so you have every corner covered.
Step 4: Bake at 200C (400F) for 18 to 20 minutes, until the crumbs are golden and you hear a faint sizzle from the edges. Let it sit 5 minutes, then serve warm as a side for roast chicken or turkey.
Spicy Chipotle Sweet Potato Casserole
You get two kinds of heat here, the slow smoke of chipotle in the mash and a proper bite of black pepper on top. A little honey keeps the spice from running away, and the whole thing balances sweet, smoke, and salt in a way plain casserole never does.

Ingredients (makes 6 servings)
- Sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed: 1 kg (2.2 lb)
- Chipotle in adobo, finely minced: 1 to 2 peppers
- Adobo sauce: 1 tsp
- Butter: 50 g (3 1/2 tbsp)
- Heavy cream: 100 ml (scant 1/2 cup)
- Honey: 2 tbsp
- Ground cumin: 1/2 tsp
- Salt: 1/2 tsp
- Lime juice: 1 tbsp
- Cotija or feta cheese, crumbled: 80 g (2/3 cup)
- Sliced almonds: 50 g (1/2 cup)
Instructions
Step 1: Boil the 1 kg (2.2 lb) sweet potatoes in salted water for 13 minutes until a fork meets no resistance. Drain them well and return to the pot so the surface dries out before you mash.
Step 2: While the potatoes cook, mince the chipotle peppers finely and measure out the 1 tsp of adobo sauce. Mash the drained potatoes with the 50 g (3 1/2 tbsp) butter, 100 ml (scant 1/2 cup) cream, honey, chipotle, adobo, cumin, and salt. Start with 1 pepper, taste, and add the second if you want more heat behind the smoke.
Step 3: Beat in the 1 tbsp lime juice and spoon the mixture into a 20 x 20 cm (8 x 8 inch) baking dish. Smooth the top so you get the cheese and almonds sitting in an even layer rather than sinking into valleys.
Step 4: Scatter the 80 g (2/3 cup) crumbled cotija and 50 g (1/2 cup) almonds over the top. Broil for 3 to 4 minutes, watching constantly, until the nuts turn a shade darker and the cheese gets a few golden spots. You want it toasted, not burnt.
Step 5: Pull the dish out and serve it immediately while the top is still crisp. A scatter of fresh coriander leaves on top cuts through the richness nicely if you have some.
Coconut Curry Sweet Potato Casserole
Take the same roasted sweet potatoes and push them into a warm, fragrant curry direction, with coconut milk in the mash and a crispy coconut flake topping. It is still a casserole, still scoopable, but the flavour leans bright and aromatic instead of sugary.

Ingredients (makes 8 servings)
- Sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks: 1.4 kg (3 lb)
- Coconut milk, full fat: 150 ml (2/3 cup)
- Red curry paste: 1 1/2 tbsp
- Lime juice: 2 tbsp
- Brown sugar: 2 tbsp
- Fish sauce or soy sauce: 1 tsp
- Salt: 1/2 tsp
- Large egg: 1
- Unsweetened coconut flakes: 60 g (3/4 cup)
- Panko breadcrumbs: 40 g (1/2 cup)
- Butter, melted: 2 tbsp
Instructions
Step 1: Heat your oven to 190C (375F). Boil the 1.4 kg (3 lb) sweet potatoes in salted water for 15 minutes until soft all the way through. Drain and mash them in the pot, letting the steam escape so you get a thick mash rather than a watery one.
Step 2: Stir the 150 ml (2/3 cup) coconut milk, 1 1/2 tbsp red curry paste, 2 tbsp lime juice, brown sugar, fish sauce or soy sauce, and salt into the hot mash. Beat in the egg until you see the whole thing looks evenly tinted and smooth. Taste it here, because the coconut flakes on top contribute very little salt.
Step 3: Scoop the curry potato mixture into a 23 x 33 cm (9 x 13 inch) dish and level it out. Toss the 60 g (3/4 cup) coconut flakes with the 40 g (1/2 cup) panko and 2 tbsp melted butter in a bowl until you see every flake is coated.
Step 4: Scatter the coconut topping across the mash, then bake for 25 minutes. The coconut flakes will toast to a deep golden brown and you will smell the curry warming through the kitchen.
Step 5: Pull the dish out when the topping is crisp and the edges are bubbling. Let it sit for 5 minutes so your first scoop comes out clean rather than sliding into a puddle.
Step 6: Serve generous spoonfuls with lime wedges on the side, squeezing a little extra juice over each portion right before you eat.
Air Fryer Sweet Potato Casserole
When you need a smaller sweet potato casserole without heating the whole oven, the air fryer does the job fast. The topping still gets crisp and the mash stays soft, just in about half the time and for a midweek table.

Ingredients (makes 4 servings)
- Sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed small: 700 g (1.5 lb)
- Butter: 40 g (3 tbsp)
- Maple syrup: 2 tbsp
- Whole milk: 60 ml (1/4 cup)
- Ground cinnamon: 3/4 tsp
- Ground nutmeg: 1/4 tsp
- Salt: 1/4 tsp
- Large egg yolk: 1
- Mini marshmallows: 80 g (1 1/2 cups)
Instructions
Step 1: Boil the 700 g (1.5 lb) sweet potatoes in a pot of salted water for 10 minutes, until you can mash them with a fork. Drain and return them to the warm pot to dry for a minute before mashing with the 40 g (3 tbsp) butter.
Step 2: Stir in the 2 tbsp maple syrup, 60 ml (1/4 cup) milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and egg yolk. Beat the mixture until it looks smooth and a little loose, then transfer it into a 15 cm (6 inch) round cake pan that fits your air fryer basket.
Step 3: Top the mash with the 80 g (1 1/2 cups) mini marshmallows in a single layer. Slide the pan into a preheated 180C (350F) air fryer basket and cook for 6 minutes, just until the marshmallows puff and turn pale gold. Peek at the 4 minute mark, because your air fryer browns faster than an oven.
Step 4: Pull the pan out carefully and rest it on a trivet for 2 minutes before serving. Spoon the casserole straight from the pan, scooping right to the bottom so you get that gooey top and the warm potato beneath in every portion.
Skillet Sweet Potato Casserole
This version cooks in one cast iron skillet, starting on the stove and finishing under the broiler, which means fewer dishes and a shorter route from raw potato to caramelised casserole. The bottom gets a little deeper in flavour from the direct heat.

Ingredients (makes 6 servings)
- Sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 2 cm chunks: 1 kg (2.2 lb)
- Butter: 70 g (5 tbsp)
- Brown sugar: 60 g (1/3 cup)
- Heavy cream: 100 ml (scant 1/2 cup)
- Ground cinnamon: 1 tsp
- Ground cardamom: 1/4 tsp
- Salt: 1/2 tsp
- Large egg: 1
- Pecans, roughly chopped: 80 g (3/4 cup)
- Demerara sugar: 2 tbsp
Instructions
Step 1: Melt 40 g (3 tbsp) of the butter in a 25 cm (10 inch) cast iron skillet over medium heat. Add the 1 kg (2.2 lb) sweet potato chunks and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until you see the edges begin to soften and pick up a few golden spots from the butter.
Step 2: Pour in 120 ml (1/2 cup) water, cover the skillet, and let the potatoes steam for 8 minutes until a knife glides through easily. Uncover and cook off any remaining liquid, then mash them right in the skillet with the remaining butter, brown sugar, cream, cinnamon, cardamom, and salt. Smooth the top with your spoon.
Step 3: Let the mash cool for 3 minutes so the egg does not scramble, then stir in the egg until it disappears. Scatter the 80 g (3/4 cup) pecans over the top and sprinkle the 2 tbsp demerara sugar evenly across the nuts so you end up with a proper crust.
Step 4: Slide the skillet under a hot broiler for 2 to 3 minutes, watching closely, until you see the sugar melt and the pecans toast. Remove it with an oven mitt, because the handle stays hot for a while after the broiler stops.
Step 5: Set the skillet on a heatproof surface and serve straight from the pan, scooping warm portions onto plates and scraping the caramelised edges into the first servings you dish up.
Dairy-Free Sweet Potato Casserole
You lose nothing in the texture here, because coconut oil and a splash of almond milk keep the mash just as silky as the butter version. The topping is a simple oat and almond crumble that gets properly crunchy without any dairy.

Ingredients (makes 8 servings)
- Sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed: 1.4 kg (3 lb)
- Coconut oil, at room temperature: 60 g (4 tbsp), plus 2 tbsp for topping
- Almond milk, unsweetened: 100 ml (scant 1/2 cup)
- Maple syrup: 60 ml (1/4 cup)
- Ground cinnamon: 1 tsp
- Ground nutmeg: 1/4 tsp
- Salt: 1/2 tsp
- Rolled oats: 60 g (2/3 cup)
- Almond flour: 50 g (1/2 cup)
- Brown sugar: 3 tbsp
Instructions
Step 1: Boil the 1.4 kg (3 lb) sweet potatoes in salted water for 15 minutes until soft. Drain them well and mash with the 60 g (4 tbsp) coconut oil, 100 ml (scant 1/2 cup) almond milk, 60 ml (1/4 cup) maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until you have a smooth, thick mash.
Step 2: Heat your oven to 180C (350F). Spread the sweet potato mixture into a 20 x 20 cm (8 x 8 inch) baking dish and smooth the top with the back of a spoon.
Step 3: Mix the 60 g (2/3 cup) oats, 50 g (1/2 cup) almond flour, 3 tbsp brown sugar, and the extra 2 tbsp melted coconut oil in a bowl until you see coarse crumbs form. Scatter it over the mash so every bit of potato is covered.
Step 4: Bake for 20 to 22 minutes, until you see the topping turn deep golden and the edges around the dish look set. Serve warm right from the dish, scooping so each plate gets both the creamy potato and the crunchy oat layer.
Mini Sweet Potato Casserole Cups
These single-serving casseroles bake in a muffin tin, so everyone gets their own ratio of crunchy top to creamy potato. They are the smart version for a holiday buffet, where a big casserole dish always turns into a lopsided mess after the first few scoops.

Ingredients (makes 12 mini cups)
- Sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed: 900 g (2 lb)
- Butter: 50 g (3 1/2 tbsp)
- Brown sugar: 40 g (3 tbsp)
- Whole milk: 60 ml (1/4 cup)
- Large egg: 1
- Ground cinnamon: 3/4 tsp
- Salt: 1/4 tsp
- Vanilla extract: 1/2 tsp
- Pecans, finely chopped: 60 g (1/2 cup)
- All purpose flour: 2 tbsp
- Butter, melted, for topping: 2 tbsp
Instructions
Step 1: Boil the 900 g (2 lb) sweet potatoes in salted water for 12 minutes until soft. Drain them well and mash with the 50 g (3 1/2 tbsp) butter, brown sugar, milk, egg, cinnamon, salt, and vanilla until you have a smooth, thick mash.
Step 2: Heat your oven to 180C (350F). Grease a 12 cup muffin tin well so the portion edges release cleanly after baking. Divide the potato mixture evenly among the cups, filling each one nearly to the top.
Step 3: In a small bowl, toss the 60 g (1/2 cup) pecans with the 2 tbsp flour and 2 tbsp melted butter until you see the nuts coated and shiny. Press a little of this mixture onto the top of each cup, pressing gently so it stays put during baking.
Step 4: Bake for 18 minutes, until you see the edges of each cup are firm and the pecan tops smell toasted. Let the tray cool on a rack for 5 minutes, then run a thin knife around each cup to loosen the sides before you lift them out.
Step 5: Place each mini cup on a serving plate or arrange them on a large board while they are still warm. Add a tiny sprinkle of flaky salt over the top before you pass them around.
Make-Ahead Freezer Sweet Potato Casserole
This one you assemble and freeze raw, then bake straight from frozen on the day you need it. The topping goes on at the end so it stays crisp, and the recipe makes two full pans, one for now and one for the busiest stretch of the holiday season.

Ingredients (makes 2 dishes, 6 servings each)
- Sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed: 2.2 kg (5 lb)
- Butter: 120 g (8 tbsp)
- Brown sugar: 100 g (1/2 cup)
- Whole milk: 180 ml (3/4 cup)
- Large eggs: 2
- Ground cinnamon: 1 1/2 tsp
- Ground nutmeg: 1/2 tsp
- Salt: 1 tsp
- Mini marshmallows: 300 g (6 cups)
- Pecans, roughly chopped: 100 g (1 cup)
Instructions
Step 1: Boil the 2.2 kg (5 lb) sweet potatoes in two batches if needed, about 15 minutes per batch, until completely soft. Drain them, return to the pot, and mash with the 120 g (8 tbsp) butter until melted and smooth. Let the mash cool to warm, not hot, so the eggs do not cook when you add them.
Step 2: Stir in the 100 g (1/2 cup) brown sugar, 180 ml (3/4 cup) milk, eggs, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until the colour is even. Divide the mixture between two 20 cm (8 inch) square freezer safe dishes and smooth the tops, then cover each one with foil, pressing it directly onto the surface of the mash so you lock out freezer burn.
Step 3: Freeze the dishes for up to 2 months. When you want to bake one, heat your oven to 180C (350F) and put the frozen dish, still covered, on a baking sheet. Bake for 45 minutes, then uncover and bake 10 more minutes until the centre is fully hot.
Step 4: Scatter half the marshmallows and half the pecans over the top of the dish, then bake for 8 to 10 minutes until the marshmallows puff and brown. You can put the second dish back in the freezer or bake it the same day.
Step 5: Rest the finished dish for 5 minutes before serving, then scoop all the way to the bottom so you get the marshmallow layer, pecan crunch, and warm potato in the same spoonful.
Apple Cranberry Sweet Potato Casserole
Sharp cranberries and sweet tart apples cut through the richness of the mash, so this version tastes brighter and a little less heavy than the classic. The fruit roasts right into the top layer, giving you little bursts of fresh flavour in every other bite.

Ingredients (makes 10 servings)
- Sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks: 1.8 kg (4 lb)
- Butter: 80 g (6 tbsp)
- Brown sugar: 70 g (1/3 cup), plus 2 tbsp for topping
- Whole milk: 120 ml (1/2 cup)
- Large eggs: 2
- Ground cinnamon: 1 tsp
- Salt: 3/4 tsp
- Tart apples, peeled and sliced thin: 2 medium
- Fresh cranberries: 100 g (1 cup)
- Rolled oats: 50 g (1/2 cup)
Instructions
Step 1: Boil the 1.8 kg (4 lb) sweet potatoes in salted water for 15 minutes until soft. Drain them and mash with the 80 g (6 tbsp) butter, 70 g (1/3 cup) brown sugar, 120 ml (1/2 cup) milk, eggs, cinnamon, and salt until you have a smooth, soft mash.
Step 2: Heat your oven to 190C (375F). Spread the mash into a 23 x 33 cm (9 x 13 inch) baking dish and level it out with your spoon.
Step 3: Toss the sliced apples and 100 g (1 cup) cranberries with the extra 2 tbsp brown sugar. Arrange them in a single layer over the top of the mash and scatter the 50 g (1/2 cup) oats over the fruit so you get a little texture on every bite.
Step 4: Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until you see the fruit slump and soften and the oats look toasted. The cranberries will split and release their juice into the potato below, which is the whole point.
Step 5: Pull the dish out and let it sit for 10 minutes so the fruit layer sets a little before you serve it. Spoon generous portions onto plates, capturing some apple, cranberry, and potato together in every scoop.
Cheddar Green Onion Sweet Potato Casserole
Think of a baked potato, then spoon it as a casserole. Sharp cheddar, a little sour cream in the mash, and plenty of green onion make this the savoury version to bring when the table already has enough sweet dishes, and the reserved cheese on top gets gorgeously browned under the broiler.

Ingredients (makes 6 servings)
- Sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed: 1 kg (2.2 lb)
- Butter: 60 g (4 tbsp)
- Sour cream: 120 g (1/2 cup)
- Whole milk: 60 ml (1/4 cup)
- Salt: 1/2 tsp
- Black pepper: 1/2 tsp
- Sharp cheddar, shredded: 150 g (1 1/2 cups)
- Green onions, sliced thin: 3, plus extra for garnish
- Panko breadcrumbs: 40 g (1/2 cup)
- Olive oil: 1 tbsp
Instructions
Step 1: Boil the 1 kg (2.2 lb) sweet potatoes in salted water for 13 minutes until soft. Drain them and return to the pot over low heat for 30 seconds to drive off extra moisture, which keeps your casserole from separating as it bakes.
Step 2: Mash the potatoes with the 60 g (4 tbsp) butter, 120 g (1/2 cup) sour cream, 60 ml (1/4 cup) milk, salt, and pepper until smooth. Fold in three quarters of the 150 g (1 1/2 cups) cheddar and most of the green onions, then taste and add a little more salt if you think the cheese has not brought enough.
Step 3: Spread the mixture into a buttered 20 cm (8 inch) square dish. Toss the 40 g (1/2 cup) panko with the 1 tbsp olive oil and scatter it over the top, then finish with the remaining cheddar so you get a cheesy crust during baking.
Step 4: Heat your broiler and place the dish on a middle rack, about 15 cm (6 inches) from the heat. Broil for 3 to 4 minutes until the cheese melts and the panko turns deep golden. Keep an eye on it, because broilers take things from brown to burnt in seconds.
Step 5: Bring the dish straight to the table and scatter the extra green onions over the top right before you serve it. Spoon it out while the cheese is still pull apart good, and pass extra sour cream on the side.
The single thing that makes or breaks any sweet potato casserole is how dry you get the potatoes before mashing. Drain them well and give them a minute back in the warm pot to steam off, and your topping stays crisp instead of sinking into a wet layer.
Pick the version that sounds best to you right now, set your oven, and get the potatoes boiling. A good casserole is never about precision, it is about tasting as you go and serving it while the top is still crisp.
