5-Minute High Protein Coffee
A creamy high protein coffee that blends cold coffee, milk, and vanilla protein powder into a frosty morning shake. It tastes like a coffee shop treat but loads 30 grams of protein into one glass.

You can make the whole thing in 5 minutes. The blender does the work, and you walk out the door with a real breakfast.
Why This Protein Coffee Works
It’s cold, thick, and almost like a melted coffee milkshake. A plain scoop of whey can taste chalky on its own, but cold coffee masks that completely.
I use vanilla protein powder because it sweetens naturally. The ice adds volume without extra calories, so the whole thing feels far more indulgent than it really is.
If I need breakfast fast, this one keeps me full until lunch and I never feel like I am choking down a supplement.
Ingredients

- 1 cup (240 ml) cold coffee: brew extra the night before or use cold brew concentrate thinned with water
- 1/2 cup (120 ml) whole milk: any dairy or unsweetened non-dairy milk works here
- 1 scoop vanilla protein powder (about 30 g): a whey, casein, or plant-based blend that you like the taste of
- 1 cup (140 g) ice cubes: more for a thicker shake, less for a thinner one
- 1 teaspoon maple syrup or honey (optional): only if your protein powder is unflavored or you like extra sweetness
Variations / Substitutions
- Dairy-free: swap the milk for oat or almond milk; oat milk gives the creamiest texture
- Chocolate version: use chocolate protein powder and drop the sweetener; it turns into a frosty mocha
- Extra richness: add 1 tablespoon of almond butter or a 1/4 of a small banana before blending
- No sweetener: many flavored protein powders are sweet enough on their own; taste before adding maple syrup

How To Make High Protein Coffee
Step 1: Add the Coffee and Milk

Pour the 1 cup (240 ml) of cold coffee and the 1/2 cup (120 ml) of milk straight into a blender. Add the 1 scoop of protein powder, the 1 cup of ice, and the teaspoon of sweetener if you are using it. The order does not matter much here, just get everything in.
Step 2: Blend Until Smooth

Blend on high for about 30 seconds, or until the ice is completely broken down and the shake looks creamy and uniform. If your blender struggles, stop once to scrape down the sides, then run it another 10 seconds. The mixture should move easily in the pitcher, with no visible ice chunks.
Step 3: Pour and Serve

Pour the shake into a tall glass and drink it right away while it is still thick and frosty. It will start to thin as it sits, so this one is best enjoyed immediately.
A Few Notes Before You Blend
- Use coffee that is fully cold, not warm. Warm coffee melts too much ice and leaves you with a thin, watery drink.
- Taste your protein powder on its own first. A powder that tastes flat or bitter by itself will still taste flat here, so choose one you genuinely enjoy.
- For a blender-free version, shake the coffee, milk, and protein powder with ice in a sealed jar, then pour it over fresh ice. It will be less frothy but still cold and satisfying.
Scale it to your cup size:
| Cup Size | Coffee | Milk | Protein Powder | Ice |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small (10 oz) | 3/4 cup | 1/3 cup | 3/4 scoop | 3/4 cup |
| Medium (16 oz) | 1 cup | 1/2 cup | 1 scoop | 1 cup |
| Large (20 oz) | 1 1/2 cups | 3/4 cup | 1 1/2 scoops | 1 1/2 cups |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use hot coffee?
No. Hot coffee will melt the ice and leave you with a warm, thin drink. Always start with cold coffee that has been chilled in the fridge.
Why did my shake come out grainy?
A grainy texture usually means the protein powder did not fully break down. Blend for a full 30 seconds on high speed, and make sure your powder is fresh, not clumped from moisture.
Does decaf work?
Yes. Swap in your favorite decaf beans or cold brew concentrate and the method stays exactly the same.
Can I skip the ice and use a frozen banana instead?
You can. Replace the ice with 1 small frozen banana. The drink will be thicker, sweeter, and a little higher in carbs, but still delicious.
