Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 (8 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 1 cup vegetable broth
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Method

  1. Heat oil in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add garlic and cook 30 seconds until fragrant. Whisk in flour, chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, and oregano; cook 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  2. Pour in tomato sauce and vegetable broth, whisking to combine. Bring to a gentle bubble, then reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Remove from heat; stir in apple cider vinegar and salt. Taste and adjust. Serve warm over burritos.

Notes

The sauce will thicken slightly as it cools. If it gets too thick after refrigeration, thin it with a splash of broth or water when reheating.
