Ingredients

  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 8 oz dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon fine sea salt
  • ½ cup semisweet chocolate chips (optional)
  • Vanilla ice cream, for serving

Method

  1. In a large microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter and dark chocolate in 30-second bursts, stirring until smooth. Let cool 5 minutes.
  2. Whisk in the sugar, then the eggs one at a time, and the vanilla. Gently stir in the flour, cocoa powder, and salt until just combined. Fold in the chocolate chips if using.
  3. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Pour batter into a lined 8x8-inch pan and spread evenly. Bake 25 to 30 minutes, until a toothpick comes out with moist crumbs.
  4. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then lift out and slice into squares. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Notes

Serve the brownies warm for the best ice cream moment. For neat slices, run a knife under hot water and wipe it between cuts. If you brown the butter first, the batter will be extra rich and nutty.
