Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Vanilla ice cream, for serving
  • Hot fudge sauce, for serving
  • Whipped cream, cherries, chopped nuts, or sprinkles, for serving

Method

  1. Whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl. In another bowl, whisk buttermilk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla. Pour wet into dry; stir until just combined. Let rest 5 minutes.
  2. Heat a waffle iron and brush lightly with butter. Pour about 1/2 cup batter per waffle onto the center, close, and cook until golden brown and crisp, 3 to 4 minutes.
  3. Place a waffle on a plate, top with ice cream, hot fudge, whipped cream, and any toppings you like. Serve immediately.

Notes

If you are really short on time, use good store-bought frozen waffles toasted until crisp. You can also make the waffles ahead, cool them on a rack, and freeze. Reheat in a toaster or oven for a few minutes before building your sundae.
