Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

Method
 

  1. Beat butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
  2. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each, then stir in vanilla.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add to butter mixture, mixing just until combined.
  4. Fold in chocolate chips and nuts, if using, until evenly distributed.
  5. Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto ungreased baking sheets, 2 inches apart. Bake at 375°F for 9-11 minutes until edges are golden and centers look slightly underdone.
  6. Let cookies cool on baking sheet for 2 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack. Serve warm.

Notes

If using salted butter, reduce the added salt to 1/2 teaspoon. For thicker cookies, chill the dough for 30 minutes before baking, and consider using bread flour for an extra-chewy texture.
