- Beat butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
- Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each, then stir in vanilla.
- In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add to butter mixture, mixing just until combined.
- Fold in chocolate chips and nuts, if using, until evenly distributed.
- Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto ungreased baking sheets, 2 inches apart. Bake at 375°F for 9-11 minutes until edges are golden and centers look slightly underdone.
- Let cookies cool on baking sheet for 2 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack. Serve warm.
Notes
If using salted butter, reduce the added salt to 1/2 teaspoon. For thicker cookies, chill the dough for 30 minutes before baking, and consider using bread flour for an extra-chewy texture.
