- Whisk eggs, milk, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt in a wide dish until smooth.
- Dip each slice of Texas toast for 15 to 20 seconds per side, then let the excess drip off.
- Melt butter in a nonstick skillet over medium heat and cook the slices for 3 to 4 minutes per side until deeply golden.
- Serve right away with butter and warm maple syrup, and a dusting of powdered sugar if you like.
Notes
Keep cooked slices warm in a 200°F oven on a wire rack while you finish the rest. If you are using very fresh bread, press each slice gently with your fingertips after soaking to help the custard soak in evenly.
