Ingredients

  • 4 slices thick-cut brioche or challah
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of fine sea salt
  • 4 slices deli ham
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)
  • Raspberry jam, for serving (optional)

Method

  1. In a shallow dish, whisk together eggs, milk, cinnamon, vanilla, and salt until smooth. Set a large nonstick skillet over medium heat to warm up.
  2. Lay out 2 slices of bread. Top each with 2 slices of ham and 2 slices of Swiss cheese. Close with the remaining bread slices and press gently.
  3. Melt 1 tablespoon butter in the skillet. Dip each sandwich in egg mixture, coating both sides and letting excess drip off. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, adding remaining butter as needed, until golden and cheese melts.
  4. Transfer to a cutting board, rest 1 minute, then cut diagonally. Dust with powdered sugar if desired and serve with raspberry jam.

Notes

For a more traditional Monte Cristo experience, a dusting of powdered sugar and a spoonful of raspberry jam on the side is classic. Don’t let the bread sit in the egg mixture, a quick dip on each side keeps the center from turning soggy.
