Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm milk (110°F)
  • 1/4 cup plus 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup whole milk, room temperature
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup strawberry jam
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened (for glaze)
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 to 3 tbsp milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Method

  1. Activate the yeast in warm milk with a pinch of sugar until foamy, then mix with the remaining sugar, flour, salt, room-temperature milk, melted butter, and egg. Knead 8 minutes until smooth and elastic, then let rise in a greased bowl for 1 hour.
  2. Beat 8 oz cream cheese, 1/4 cup sugar, and vanilla until smooth and spreadable.
  3. Roll the dough into a 16x12-inch rectangle, spread the cream cheese mixture leaving a border, then dollop and spread the strawberry jam.
  4. Roll the dough into a tight log, seal, cut into 9 rolls, and arrange in a greased 9x9-inch pan. Cover and let rise 30 to 40 minutes until puffy.
  5. Preheat the oven to 350°F and bake for 25 to 30 minutes until golden and set. Cool 10 minutes.
  6. Whisk 4 oz cream cheese, powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla into a pourable glaze, then spoon over the warm rolls and serve.

Notes

Rising time is not included in prep and cook times; expect about 1 hour 30 minutes total for both rises. The rolls taste best warm and fresh, but leftovers keep well for a few days.
