Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup hoisin sauce
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp toasted sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp grated fresh ginger
  • 1 tsp sriracha or chili flakes (optional)

Method

  1. Whisk together all ingredients in a small saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring, until sugar dissolves, about 2 minutes.
  2. Reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring often, until sauce is thick enough to coat a spoon, 8 to 10 minutes.
  3. Remove from heat and let cool 5 minutes. Brush onto grilled meats or vegetables during last few minutes of cooking, or serve as a dipping sauce.

Notes

This sauce thickens considerably as it cools, so it may look thin in the pan. For a milder garlic flavor, add the minced garlic in the last 2 minutes of simmering instead of at the start.
