Ingredients
Method
- Whisk the flour, baking powder, and salt together. Cream the butter and sugar for 3 minutes, then beat in the egg and vanilla. Mix in the dry ingredients in two additions just until combined.
- Shape the dough into a disk, wrap, and chill at least 1 hour.
- Roll the dough to 1/4 inch thick on a floured surface. Cut out stars and place on parchment-lined baking sheets.
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Brush the cookies with water, sprinkle with sparkling sugar, and bake for 8 to 10 minutes until edges are barely golden. Cool on the sheet 5 minutes, then transfer to a rack.
Notes
The dough must chill for at least 1 hour or it will spread. If you’re baking multiple sheets, keep the unbaked cutouts in the fridge while you work. Sparkling sugar gives the prettiest finish, but the cookies are just as tasty plain.
