Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp fine sea salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup full-fat sour cream
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar or colored sanding sugar, for sprinkling
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Method

  1. Whisk flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt together in a medium bowl.
  2. Beat butter and 1 cup sugar with a mixer until pale and fluffy, about 2 minutes.
  3. Add egg and vanilla, then mix in sour cream until smooth.
  4. Gradually mix in dry ingredients until a soft dough forms. Scoop tablespoon-sized balls onto parchment-lined sheets, sprinkle with the 2 tbsp sugar, and bake at 375°F for 10 to 12 minutes.
  5. Cool on the sheet 5 minutes, transfer to a wire rack to cool completely, then dust with powdered sugar and serve.

Notes

If you prefer a thicker, slightly more domed cookie, chill the dough for 30 minutes before scooping. This resting time is not included in the prep or cook times.
