Ingredients

  • 1 plain or everything bagel, sliced
  • 2 oz smoked salmon
  • 2 tbsp cream cheese, softened
  • 1 tsp capers, drained
  • 4 to 5 thin slices red onion
  • 1 tsp fresh dill, roughly chopped
  • Lemon wedge
  • Freshly cracked black pepper

Method

  1. Toast the bagel halves until just golden, about 2 minutes.
  2. Spread 1 tablespoon cream cheese onto each warm half, all the way to the edges.
  3. Drape the smoked salmon evenly over the cream cheese, tearing pieces to fit.
  4. Scatter the capers, red onion, and dill on top, then finish with a squeeze of lemon and black pepper. Serve immediately.

Notes

If you’re using a toaster oven or broiler, watch carefully so the bagel doesn’t burn. This recipe tastes best right after assembly—the warmth of the toast against the cold salmon is half the pleasure.
