Ingredients

  • 6 banana peppers
  • 1 lb bulk Italian sausage
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • Salt and black pepper
  • 1 (24 oz) jar marinara sauce
  • 1/4 cup grated parmesan

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Brown the sausage and garlic in a skillet over medium heat for 7 to 8 minutes, then drain any fat.
  2. Mix the cooked sausage with cream cheese, mozzarella, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper until well combined.
  3. Slice peppers in half lengthwise, remove seeds, and fill each half with about 2 to 3 tablespoons of the sausage mixture.
  4. Spread marinara in a 9x13 inch dish, nestle the peppers filling-side up, cover with foil, and bake for 25 minutes.
  5. Remove foil, top with parmesan, and broil for 2 to 3 minutes until bubbly and golden. Rest 3 minutes, spoon sauce over each pepper, and serve hot.

Notes

The peppers will soften more the longer they bake. For a firmer bite, reduce the covered bake time to 20 minutes. If your marinara is very chunky, thin it with 2 or 3 tablespoons of water so it does not reduce too much.
