Method
- Rinse the rice and cook it according to the package directions until tender and fluffy.
- Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat, then cook the onion until soft, about 4 minutes. Add garlic and cook 30 seconds. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute until pale golden.
- Slowly whisk in the broth, then add soy sauce and black pepper. Bring to a bubble, reduce heat to low, and simmer for 6 to 8 minutes until thickened. Season with salt if needed.
- Pile the rice into bowls, ladle the gravy over the top, and serve hot.
Notes
If the rice finishes before the gravy, keep it covered off the heat so it stays warm. For a thicker gravy, simmer a minute or two longer; for a thinner one, stir in a little extra broth right before serving.
