- Make the cookie dough: Preheat oven to 350°F. Beat butter and sugar until fluffy. Add egg and extracts. Mix dry ingredients, then gradually add to butter mixture. Chill dough for at least 1 hour.
- Roll dough to ¼-inch thickness, cut shapes, and place on parchment-lined baking sheet. Poke a hole near the top with a straw. Re-roll scraps once.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes per sheet, until edges are just lightly golden. Cool on wire rack completely.
- For royal icing, whisk powdered sugar and meringue powder, then add water and vanilla, beat until thick and opaque. Tint with food coloring, outline and flood cookies. Let dry completely (2+ hours). Thread string through holes and hang or serve.
Notes
Chill time of 1 hour is not included in prep. Decorating time depends on design complexity; allow extra for drying. You may need to bake in 2-3 batches depending on cookie size.
