Ingredients
Method
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Whisk flour, baking powder, salt, and 3/4 cup sugar in a large bowl. Stir in melted butter, eggs, vanilla, and milk until just combined.
- Butter an 8-inch round cake pan. Arrange orange slices in a single layer on the bottom and sprinkle with 2 tbsp sugar.
- Pour batter over the oranges and smooth the top. Bake 40 to 45 minutes until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then invert onto a plate and serve warm or at room temperature.
Notes
The cake will keep for about 4 days at room temperature, but the crunchy sugar top is best the day it’s made. To revive a lost crunch, warm slices in a low oven for 5 minutes. Let the cake cool fully before covering if you plan to store it, or the trapped steam will make the crust tacky.
