Ingredients

  • 1½ cups (190 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar
  • 1½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp fine sea salt
  • ½ cup (115 g) unsalted butter, very soft
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup (120 g) full-fat sour cream
  • ¼ cup (60 ml) whole milk, room temperature
  • 8 oz (226 g) full-fat brick cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup (115 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups (360 g) powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of fine sea salt
  • 2 brown candy-coated chocolates
  • 1 orange wedge-shaped candy
  • 1 tsp black writing icing or small piece of black fondant

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a 9-inch round cake pan with grease, parchment, and flour.
  2. Cream the butter and sugar until fluffy, about 2 minutes. Beat in eggs one at a time, then vanilla and sour cream.
  3. Whisk flour, baking powder, and salt. Add to the batter in three additions alternating with milk, mixing just until combined.
  4. Bake for 28-32 minutes, until golden and a toothpick comes out with moist crumbs. Cool completely.
  5. Beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla, and salt; whip until thick.
  6. Level the cake if needed, then frost the top and sides with a thick white layer. Create a fluffy crown texture on top.
  7. Press brown candies on for eyes, add black dots for pupils, and place the orange beak below. Pipe a curved smile.
  8. Slice and serve at room temperature.

Notes

If your frosting feels soft while decorating, pop the cake in the fridge for 10 minutes. The candies set best when cold. Serve the same day for the brightest face, but leftovers keep well chilled.
