Ingredients

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 bell pepper, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 large potato, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch cubes (about 1 cup)
  • 1/2 cup pitted green olives, halved
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 1 tbsp capers, drained
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Cooked white rice, for serving

Method

  1. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high. Add beef, season with salt, and cook 5 to 7 minutes until browned, breaking up clumps. Remove beef with a slotted spoon.
  2. Add onion and bell pepper to the skillet. Cook about 4 minutes until softened, then stir in garlic and cook 1 minute.
  3. Return beef to the pan. Add cumin, oregano, cinnamon, bay leaf, tomato sauce, 1/2 cup water, and potatoes. Bring to a simmer.
  4. Cover, reduce heat to low, and cook 15 to 20 minutes, stirring once or twice, until potatoes are fork-tender.
  5. Uncover and fold in olives, raisins, and capers. Cook 5 minutes. Remove bay leaf, then season with salt and pepper.
  6. Spoon over rice, garnish with cilantro if using, and serve hot.

Notes

If you prefer a thicker picadillo, simmer uncovered for the last 5 minutes before adding the olives. Leftovers taste even better the next day.
