Ingredients

  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ⅛ tsp ground cloves
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup packed light brown sugar
  • ½ cup vegetable or canola oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup canned pumpkin puree
  • ¼ cup whole milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar (for swirl)
  • 1 tbsp light brown sugar (for swirl)
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon (for swirl)

Method

  1. Whisk the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves in a large bowl.
  2. Add the 1 cup granulated sugar, ¼ cup brown sugar, oil, eggs, pumpkin, milk, and vanilla. Whisk until smooth.
  3. Stir together the remaining sugars and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Pour half the batter into a greased, parchment-lined 9×5-inch loaf pan. Sprinkle most of the cinnamon sugar over it, then top with the rest of the batter. Sprinkle the remaining cinnamon sugar on top.
  4. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 55 to 65 minutes, until a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes.
  5. Lift out by the parchment, cool completely, then slice.

Notes

Let the bread cool all the way before slicing for the cleanest cuts. The center will set up as it cools and the swirl will look neater. If you need to speed things up, cool on a wire rack uncovered, which takes about 2 hours.
