Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • ½ cup finely chopped yellow onion
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • ⅓ cup beef broth
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 4 soft hamburger buns, split
  • Toppings: yellow mustard, dill pickle slices, diced raw onion

Method

  1. Brown the ground beef and onion in a large skillet over medium-high heat for 6 to 8 minutes, breaking the meat into small crumbles.
  2. Stir in garlic powder, mustard, Worcestershire, vinegar, broth, salt, and pepper. Simmer over low heat for 5 to 7 minutes until the liquid mostly absorbs.
  3. Toast the buns under a broiler or in a dry skillet until golden, about 1 to 2 minutes.
  4. Pile the meat onto the bottom buns, add your toppings, and serve immediately.

Notes

Keep the meat loose and moist by stopping the simmer once it looks glossy but not dry. If it loses too much liquid, stir in a tablespoon of broth before serving. Classic topping combos are mustard and pickles, but crisp raw onion adds a nice sharp bite.
