Ingredients

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, sliced
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 2 cups chopped leftover Halloween candy

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and line two baking sheets. Brown the butter in a saucepan over medium heat, swirling often, until amber and nutty. Pour into a bowl and cool 10 minutes.
  2. Whisk brown sugar and granulated sugar into the cooled butter until sandy, then whisk in egg and vanilla until thick.
  3. Whisk flour, baking soda, and salt together. Fold into the wet mix until just combined.
  4. Chop candy into pea- to grape-sized pieces, then fold into the dough.
  5. Scoop 1½-tablespoon portions onto sheets, spacing 2 inches apart. Bake 11 to 13 minutes until edges are set and centers look soft. Cool on the sheet 3 minutes, then move to a rack.

Notes

Use a mix of candy for the best texture. If the dough feels greasy after mixing, let it sit 5 minutes before scooping; the flour will absorb the butter. This recipe works with any combination of chocolate, caramel, and crispy candies, so dig through that bag.
