Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • Optional: ½ tsp gochujang or red pepper flakes
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds
  • Cooked white rice, for serving

Method

  1. Whisk together soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, ginger, and gochujang or pepper flakes if using. Set the sauce by the stove.
  2. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and let it sear undisturbed for 2 minutes, then break it up and cook about 5 minutes until no pink remains. Drain excess fat if needed.
  3. Reduce heat to medium. Stir in garlic and cook 30 seconds. Pour in the sauce and cook, stirring, for 2 to 3 minutes until the beef is coated in a glossy glaze.
  4. Serve over hot rice, topped with green onions and sesame seeds.

Notes

The beef cooks quickly, so have your sauce mixed and rice ready before you start the skillet. If you like a bit of crunch, a quick cucumber ribbon or pickled radish on the side works well.
