Ingredients

  • 8 oz dried Mission figs, stems removed
  • 1/2 cup walnuts or almonds
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 2 tbsp honey or dark brown sugar
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 1 oz dark chocolate, finely chopped
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 to 3 tbsp milk, as needed
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 to 2 tbsp milk or fresh orange juice
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract

Method

  1. Make the filling: Pulse figs, walnuts, raisins, honey, zest, cinnamon, cloves, and chocolate in a food processor until a sticky paste forms. Set aside.
  2. Mix the dough: Whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Beat in butter until crumbly, then egg, vanilla, and 2 tbsp milk, adding the last tbsp only if needed. Shape into a disc, wrap, and chill at least 1 hour.
  3. Roll and fill: Roll dough to a 12x8-inch rectangle. Spread filling evenly, leaving a 1-inch border on long sides. Roll up tightly from a long edge, pinch to seal, wrap, and chill 30 minutes.
  4. Slice and bake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Slice log into 3/4-inch rounds, place cut side up on a parchment-lined sheet. Bake 15 to 18 minutes until edges are just golden. Cool 5 minutes on the sheet, then transfer to a rack to cool completely.
  5. Glaze: Whisk powdered sugar, 1 to 2 tbsp milk, and 1/4 tsp vanilla. Dip or drizzle cookies, then let set 20 minutes.

Notes

The dough needs to chill for at least 1 hour and the filled log for 30 minutes before baking; that time is not included in the prep estimate. Both the filling and the dough can be made a day ahead.
