Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 1/4 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 tbsp whole milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 medium yellow onion, sliced thin
  • 8 oz cremini mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Optional: 2 tbsp heavy cream

Method

  1. Combine ground beef, panko, milk, egg, 1 tsp Worcestershire, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently and shape into 4 oval patties.
  2. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high. Sear patties 4 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
  3. Melt butter in the same skillet. Add onion and mushrooms, cook 6 to 8 minutes until soft and golden. Add garlic, cook 30 seconds.
  4. Sprinkle flour over vegetables, stir 1 minute. Slowly whisk in broth and 1 tbsp Worcestershire. Simmer 5 minutes until thickened. Optional: stir in cream.
  5. Return patties to skillet, spoon gravy over, cover, and simmer 5 to 7 minutes until internal temperature reaches 160°F. Serve over mashed potatoes.

Notes

Let the patties rest for a minute off the heat before serving so the juices settle. If the gravy gets too thick after simmering, splash in a little more broth until it reaches the consistency you like.
