Ingredients
Method
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 4-inch round cake pan and line with parchment. Whisk flour, baking powder, and salt. Beat 2 tablespoons butter and sugar until fluffy, about 2 minutes. Beat in egg and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. Alternate adding dry ingredients and milk until just combined.
- Pour batter into pan and smooth top. Bake 18 to 22 minutes, until a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs. Cool in pan 5 minutes, then transfer to a rack and cool completely.
- Beat 2 tablespoons butter, powdered sugar, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, and 1 teaspoon milk until fluffy, adding more milk if needed. Tint portions pink and black (and a tiny bit yellow) using food coloring.
- Spread a thin crumb coat of white icing on the cooled cake. Chill 15 minutes. Apply a final smooth white layer, shaping into a dome.
- Pipe or draw black oval eyes, a yellow nose, a pink bow on one side, and three whiskers on each side. Serve right away or chill.
Notes
The cake keeps in the fridge for up to 3 days. For the black details, melted dark chocolate makes an easy alternative to black icing. Be sure the cake is completely cool before frosting, or the icing will slide off.
