Ingredients

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

Method

  1. Beat butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until fluffy, about 2 to 3 minutes. Beat in eggs and vanilla until smooth.
  2. Whisk flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually mix into the butter mixture on low speed, stopping when just combined. Fold in chocolate chips.
  3. Cover and refrigerate dough for at least 30 minutes, up to 24 hours.
  4. Scoop 1 1/2 tablespoon portions, roll into balls, and place on parchment-lined sheets. Flatten to 1/2 inch thick, pinch the bottom into a point, and press two top dents to form a heart.
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake 10 to 12 minutes, until edges are golden and centers look soft. Cool on the sheet for 5 minutes, then move to a rack.

Notes

Chilling time is not counted in prep. Dough can be chilled overnight for deeper flavor. Freeze unshaped dough balls for up to 3 months.
