Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup whole milk, room temperature
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tbsp heavy cream or milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Sprinkles (optional)

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and grease a 9-inch heart-shaped cake pan. Cream 1/2 cup butter and sugar 3 minutes until light.
  2. Add eggs one at a time, then vanilla, mixing until smooth.
  3. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Add to butter mixture in three parts, alternating with milk in two parts, mixing just until combined.
  4. Pour batter into pan, smooth top, and bake 30-35 minutes until a toothpick comes out with moist crumbs. Cool 10 minutes in pan, then turn out onto a rack to cool completely.
  5. Beat 1 cup butter for frosting until smooth. Add powdered sugar, cream, and vanilla, then whip until fluffy. Spread over cooled cake and decorate with sprinkles.

Notes

Allow the cake to cool entirely before frosting, about 1 hour. For a chilled crumb coat, refrigerate the frosted cake for 20 minutes, then add a second thin layer of buttercream if you want it perfectly smooth.
