- In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the milk, brown sugar, butter, and salt. Whisk until the butter melts and sugar dissolves, about 3-4 minutes, just until steaming. Do not boil.
- While the milk warms, whip the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and 1/2 tsp vanilla in a bowl until soft peaks form, about 2 minutes.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the 1 tsp vanilla. Pour into two mugs and top each with a generous spoonful of whipped cream. Serve immediately.
Notes
For a stronger butterscotch punch, stir 1/4 tsp butterscotch extract into the warm milk with the vanilla. The whipped cream is best made just before serving, but you can chill the mixing bowl and beaters ahead of time to speed things up.
