Ingredients

  • 6 medium apples, peeled and sliced 1/4 inch thick
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup gluten-free rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup gluten-free all-purpose flour blend
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
  • Pinch of salt

Method

  1. Mix the oats, flour blend, brown sugar, and salt. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces.
  2. Toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, cornstarch, and cinnamon until evenly coated.
  3. Spread the apples in a 9-inch deep-dish pie plate or 8x8-inch baking dish, then scatter the crumble topping unevenly on top.
  4. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 40-45 minutes, until the juices bubble thickly and the top is golden brown. Cool 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

The crumble needs a short rest after baking so the filling thickens properly. If you use apples that are very juicy, the juices may bubble over, so always place the dish on a baking sheet before it goes into the oven.
