Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp fine sea salt
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 5 tbsp cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 3/4 cup cold buttermilk
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp finely chopped fresh parsley

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment. Whisk flour, baking powder, garlic powder, salt, and baking soda in a large bowl. Cut in cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces.
  2. Stir in cheddar, then pour in buttermilk. Fold with a spatula just until a shaggy, sticky dough forms—do not overmix.
  3. Drop dough in ¼-cup mounds onto the sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Bake for 12 to 14 minutes, until golden brown on top and crisp on the bottom.
  4. Combine melted butter, remaining garlic powder, and parsley. Brush generously over hot biscuits and serve warm.

Notes

These biscuits are at their very best right out of the oven. For the fluffiest result, make sure your buttermilk and butter are straight from the fridge. If the dough seems too dry, add an extra tablespoon of buttermilk—a slightly wetter dough bakes up softer.
