Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • ½ cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • ¾ cup cold buttermilk
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted, plus 1 small garlic clove, minced

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Whisk flour, baking powder, salt, and garlic powder in a large bowl.
  2. Cut the cold butter into the flour mixture using a pastry cutter or your fingers until pea-sized pieces remain.
  3. Add the shredded cheddar and buttermilk. Stir just until a shaggy dough forms, taking care not to overmix.
  4. Drop ¼-cup scoops of dough onto a parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing them apart. Bake 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown.
  5. Combine the melted butter and minced garlic. Brush over the hot biscuits right after they leave the oven and serve warm.

Notes

If you do not have buttermilk, add 1 teaspoon of lemon juice or white vinegar to ¾ cup of milk and let it sit for 5 minutes before using. The biscuits are best the day they are baked, but you can store and reheat them using the tips above.
