- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large bowl, whisk flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add brown sugar, eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla to the same bowl. Whisk until smooth and glossy.
- Pour in hot coffee and whisk gently until the batter is thin and pourable.
- Grease a 9-inch round pan and line with parchment. Pour batter in, smooth the top, and bake 30-35 minutes until a toothpick has moist crumbs.
- Cool 10 minutes in the pan, then turn out onto a rack to cool completely. Slice and serve.
Notes
For the richest flavor, use hot coffee; hot water works but the chocolate taste will be milder. This cake tastes even better the next day after the moisture settles in.
