Ingredients

  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1/2 tsp granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt, plus more to taste
  • 1 cup full-fat sour cream
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder (optional)
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • Fresh chives, for garnish (optional)

Method

  1. Caramelize the onions: Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat, add sliced onions, sugar, and salt; cook, stirring occasionally, for about 20 minutes until deep golden and jammy.
  2. Mix the base: In a bowl, combine sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire, garlic powder, onion powder, and pepper until smooth. Let onions cool 10 minutes.
  3. Fold the cooled onions into the base. Taste and adjust salt.
  4. Transfer to a serving bowl, swirl the top, and garnish with chives. Serve immediately or chill at least 30 minutes.

Notes

Chill for at least 30 minutes for the best flavor. The dip keeps in the fridge for up to 4 days; stir before serving.
