Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1 cup cold buttermilk
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp dried parsley

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment. Whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, salt, and garlic powder in a large bowl.
  2. Cut cold butter cubes into the flour mixture with a pastry cutter or your fingers until the largest pieces are pea-sized.
  3. Add buttermilk and shredded cheddar; stir with a fork just until a thick, shaggy dough forms.
  4. Drop 12 mounds of dough (about 1/4 cup each) onto the sheet, spacing them 2 inches apart.
  5. Bake 12 to 15 minutes, until deeply golden and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Mix melted butter, garlic powder, and parsley; brush over hot biscuits immediately. Serve warm.

Notes

The biscuits are most tender right out of the oven, so plan to serve them warm. For an extra pop, set out a small dish of extra garlic butter for dipping.
