Ingredients

  • 6 large Granny Smith apples (about 2½ lbs)
  • ½ cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • Pinch kosher salt
  • ¾ cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • ⅓ cup all-purpose flour (for the crumble)
  • ⅓ cup packed light brown sugar (for the crumble)
  • ⅓ cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • Pinch kosher salt (for the crumble)

Method

  1. Toss sliced apples with lemon juice, then mix in brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until evenly coated.
  2. Combine oats, flour, brown sugar, and salt for the crumble. Work in cold butter with your fingers until clumpy.
  3. Preheat oven to 375°F. Pour apples into a 9-inch pie dish, scatter crumble on top. Bake 40-45 minutes until bubbly and golden.
  4. Let cool at least 20 minutes before slicing. Serve warm.

Notes

This pie is best enjoyed the day it’s baked while the topping is crisp. If the crumble browns too quickly, tent the dish loosely with foil for the last 15 minutes of baking.
