Ingredients

  • 1 lb lean ground beef (90/10)
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 8 oz can tomato sauce
  • ¼ cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 2 tbsp packed light brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • ½ tsp kosher salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper

Method

  1. Brown the ground beef and onion in a skillet over medium-high heat until no pink remains, about 6 to 8 minutes. Drain excess fat.
  2. Transfer to the crockpot and stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, chili powder, cumin, salt, and pepper.
  3. Cover and cook on low for 4 to 6 hours, or on high for 2 to 3 hours. Stir once or twice if possible.
  4. Spoon the hot chili over warm hot dogs in toasted buns and add any toppings you like.

Notes

Leftovers taste even better the next day, so this is a great make-ahead for a cookout.
