Ingredients

  • 1 lb day-old brioche or challah, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 ½ cups whole milk
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • Butter or nonstick spray for the crock
  • Maple syrup, powdered sugar, and fresh berries for serving

Method

  1. Grease a 6-quart slow cooker. Add bread cubes and spread evenly.
  2. Whisk eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth. Pour over the bread and press down gently to submerge.
  3. Cover and cook on LOW for 4 to 5 hours or HIGH for 2 to 3 hours, until the center is set and edges are golden.
  4. Turn off the slow cooker and rest uncovered for 10 minutes. Scoop onto plates and serve with syrup, powdered sugar, and berries.

Notes

Let the casserole rest after cooking so it slices or scoops neatly. For a crispier top, run it under the broiler for 2 to 3 minutes before serving only if your crock insert is broiler-safe.
