Ingredients

  • 8 oz tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp distilled white vinegar
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1 tsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • ½ tsp ground cumin
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ¼ tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp fine sea salt
  • Pinch cayenne pepper

Method

  1. In a small saucepan, whisk together the tomato sauce, vinegar, water, sugar, chili powder, cumin, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and cayenne.
  2. Bring to a gentle bubble over medium heat, then reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 10 minutes, stirring once halfway through.
  3. Remove from heat, cool for a few minutes, then transfer to a clean jar. Serve immediately or refrigerate once cooled.

Notes

The sauce thickens as it cools, so it will look a little looser in the pan than it does on the taco. Taste and adjust the salt after simmering, and remember the flavors will mellow overnight in the fridge.
