Ingredients

  • 3 slices sturdy white bread, such as Texas toast
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 4 slices deli ham
  • 4 slices deli turkey
  • 4 slices roast beef
  • 4 slices salami
  • 2 slices American cheese
  • 2 slices Swiss cheese
  • 2 leaves iceberg lettuce
  • 4 thin tomato slices
  • 4 dill pickle chips
  • A few thin red onion rings, soaked and drained

Method

  1. Toast the 3 slices of bread in a dry skillet over medium heat for about 2 minutes per side until golden and crisp.
  2. Spread 1 tbsp mayonnaise on one side of two slices. Spread the remaining 1 tbsp mayo and the mustard on one side of the third slice.
  3. Place one mayo-only slice mayo side up, then layer 2 slices each of ham, turkey, roast beef, and salami. Add 1 slice American cheese, 2 tomato slices, and onion rings.
  4. Top with the double-spread middle slice spread side down. Repeat the meat layering, add the remaining American cheese and the Swiss cheese, then finish with lettuce, pickles, and the last 2 tomato slices.
  5. Close with the final bread slice, cut in half diagonally with a serrated knife, and secure with toothpicks. Serve immediately.

Notes

This sandwich is huge and made for one. If serving two, build each sandwich separately rather than trying to double the stack. Keep deli meats cold until the moment you assemble, and don’t leave the assembled sandwich sitting—eat it right away while the toast is crunchy.
