- Whisk together the ketchup, vinegar, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper in a medium saucepan.
- Bring to a simmer over medium heat, then reduce heat to low. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 20 minutes until thickened.
- Remove from heat, taste, and adjust with salt or a pinch of cayenne.
- Brush warm sauce over grilled meat or serve as a dipping sauce.
Notes
The sauce thickens more as it cools. If it gets too thick after chilling, thin it out with a splash of water. For a deeper smoky flavor, add ½ teaspoon of liquid smoke with the wet ingredients.
