Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp fine sea salt
  • 1 cup canned pumpkin puree
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 3/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips

Method

  1. Whisk the pumpkin puree, oil, sugar, eggs, and vanilla in a large bowl until smooth.
  2. Sprinkle the flour, cocoa, baking soda, and salt over the wet mixture and stir just until combined. Add the milk and fold it through.
  3. Fold in the chocolate chips with a few broad strokes.
  4. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C), grease a 9x5-inch loaf pan, pour in the batter, press a few chips on top, and bake 55 to 65 minutes until a toothpick comes out with moist crumbs.
  5. Cool in the pan 15 minutes, then turn out onto a rack, slice when barely warm, and serve.

Notes

For the cleanest slices, a serrated knife and a light sawing motion work best. If your loaf domes a lot and the top starts browning too fast, tent it loosely with foil for the last 10 minutes.
