Ingredients
Method
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Whisk flour, baking powder, salt, ¾ cup sugar, and 2 tbsp cocoa in a bowl. Add milk, melted butter, and vanilla. Stir into a thick batter, then spread into an ungreased 8-inch square baking dish.
- Mix the remaining granulated sugar, brown sugar, and ¼ cup cocoa. Sprinkle evenly over the batter. Do not stir.
- Slowly pour boiling water over the back of a spoon onto the topping. Bake for 35 minutes, until the top is set and the sauce is bubbling.
- Let stand 5 minutes. Spoon into bowls, scooping deep to get both cake and sauce, and serve with vanilla ice cream.
Notes
Use boiling water straight from the kettle for the sauce to form. The dish will be full, so place it on a baking sheet if you are worried about drips. For the glossiest sauce, serve as soon as it has cooled slightly.
