Ingredients

  • 1 box (15.25 oz) devil’s food cake mix, plus oil, eggs, and water as directed on box
  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup chocolate syrup
  • 1 ½ cups heavy cream, cold
  • ¼ cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch pan. Prepare cake batter as directed on the box, pour into pan, and bake 25 to 30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  2. While the cake is warm, poke holes all over with a wooden spoon handle. Whisk sweetened condensed milk and chocolate syrup, pour over the cake, then cool completely and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
  3. Beat cold heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla until soft peaks form. Spread whipped cream over the chilled cake.
  4. Slice into 12 squares and serve cold.

Notes

The 2-hour chill step is not counted in the prep or cook time but is essential for the cake to fully absorb the soak. If you are short on time, a tub of thawed frozen whipped topping can step in for the homemade cream.
