Ingredients

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 cup dark corn syrup
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 cups pecan halves, toasted
  • 3/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Flaky sea salt, for topping (optional)

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9x13-inch pan with parchment. Mix melted butter, sugar, salt, and flour; press evenly into pan. Bake 20 minutes until edges are lightly golden.
  2. Meanwhile, toast pecans in the oven or a dry skillet for 5-7 minutes until fragrant. Cool slightly.
  3. Whisk eggs, brown sugar, corn syrup, 1/4 cup melted butter, vanilla, and salt until smooth. Fold in pecans and chocolate chips.
  4. Pour filling over hot crust and spread evenly. Bake 30-35 minutes until edges are set and center has a slight jiggle.
  5. Cool completely in the pan on a wire rack. Lift out, slice into 16 squares, and sprinkle with flaky salt if desired.

Notes

The bars need to cool completely before slicing—at least 1 hour. For the neatest squares, chill them for an extra hour in the fridge. A sprinkle of flaky salt right before serving makes all the flavors pop.
