- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line an 8-inch square baking pan with parchment paper, leaving overhang. Beat the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Beat in the egg and vanilla until combined.
- Add the flour, baking soda, and salt, and mix on low just until no streaks remain. Fold in the chocolate chips, saving a few for the top.
- Press the dough evenly into the pan, dot with the reserved chips, and bake for 22 to 26 minutes, until the edges are golden and the center is just set.
- Cool in the pan on a rack for 10 minutes, then lift out using the parchment. Slice into 9 squares and serve warm.
Notes
For the chewiest bars, pull them from the oven when the center still looks slightly underdone. It will set as it cools, keeping the texture soft and fudgy rather than dry.
