Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • ½ medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (8 oz) can tomato sauce
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 2 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp kosher salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp sugar
  • 8 hot dogs
  • 8 hot dog buns
  • Shredded cheddar, diced onion, yellow mustard, and pickled jalapeños, for topping

Method

  1. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high. Brown the ground beef for 5 minutes, breaking it up. Add onion and garlic, cook 3 minutes until soft.
  2. Stir in chili powder, cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper; cook 30 seconds. Add tomato sauce, broth, Worcestershire, and sugar. Simmer uncovered 15 minutes until thickened.
  3. Cook hot dogs using your preferred method (boil, grill, or pan-fry). Toast the buns lightly.
  4. Place each hot dog in a bun, spoon chili on top, and add cheese, onion, mustard, and jalapeños. Serve immediately.

Notes

The chili can be made a day ahead, which deepens the flavor. If the sauce thickens too much upon standing, stir in a tablespoon of water when reheating. For a spicier chili, use a hot chili powder blend or add a pinch of cayenne.
