- In a large bowl, gently mix the ground chicken, grated onion, breadcrumbs, mayo, egg, garlic powder, salt, and pepper until just combined.
- Heat the oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Form 4 patties about 3/4 inch thick and cook for 5 minutes per side until golden and the internal temperature reaches 165°F.
- Place a slice of cheddar on each patty, cover the pan, and let it sit off the heat for 1 minute until melted.
- Toast the buns in the same skillet, then stack the patties with your favorite toppings and serve right away.
Notes
If you have time, chill the shaped patties for 15 minutes before cooking; they hold their shape even better. The internal temperature is the surest sign the burgers are done, so a quick-read thermometer takes the guesswork out.
