Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/2 tsp fine sea salt
  • 2/3 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/3 cup dried tart cherries
  • 1/3 cup cherry preserves
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp whole milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Method

  1. Proof yeast in warm milk with 1 tbsp sugar; mix with flour, remaining sugar, salt, melted butter, and egg to form a shaggy dough.
  2. Knead on a floured surface for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth, then let rise in a buttered bowl for 1 1/2 hours until doubled.
  3. Punch down, roll into a 10x14 inch rectangle, spread with softened butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, chopped soaked cherries, and dot with preserves. Roll tightly and pinch the seam.
  4. Slice into 12 rolls, place in a buttered 9x13 dish, cover, and let rise 45 minutes until doubled. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  5. Bake for 22 to 25 minutes until golden. Cool 5 minutes.
  6. Beat cream cheese, powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth. Drizzle over warm rolls and serve.

Notes

Rise times are not included in the prep time. For an overnight version, refrigerate the filled rolls after Step 4 and bake the next morning, adding 30 minutes at room temperature before the oven.
