- Whisk the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl. Make a well in the center.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the buttermilk, melted butter, egg, and vanilla until smooth.
- Pour the wet mixture into the dry and stir just until no dry streaks remain. Gently fold in the blueberries.
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a 12-cup muffin pan. Divide batter among cups, filling to the rims. Sprinkle with coarse sugar. Place in oven, immediately lower temperature to 375°F (190°C), and bake 5 minutes at the initial high heat, then continue 12 to 15 minutes at 375°F until golden and a toothpick comes out with moist crumbs.
- Cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a rack. Serve warm.
Notes
For the tallest muffins, let the batter rest 5 minutes before scooping and avoid opening the oven door. If using frozen blueberries, add them straight from the freezer without thawing.
